Tour Details

Known as the “Coca-Cola” route, the Marangu route is a classic trek on Mount Kilimanjaro. It is the oldest, most well established route. Many favor the Marangu route because it is considered to be the easiest path on the mountain, given its gradual slope. It is also the only route which offers sleeping huts in dormitory style accommodations.

The minimum days required for this route is five, although the probability of successfully reaching the top in that time period is quite low. Spending an extra acclimatization day on the mountain is highly recommended when climbing Klimanjaro using the Marangu route.

However, despite its immense popularity, we avoid leading climbs on the Marangu route. The route has the least scenic variety of all the routes because the ascent and descent are done on the same path and it is the most crowded route for that reason. Marangu is favored only during the rainy season, where the hut accommodations are preferred over wet ground, or for those who only have five days to climb Kilimanjaro (which we do not recommend anyhow). Otherwise, the Marangu route is a poor choice.

Itinerary

DAY 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

You will be transferred to Marangu Gate (1,800 m) for registration and issuing of the climbing permit. The hike begins by ascending a beautiful, tropical rain forest that offers the opportunity of seeing wildlife like the Blue Colobus monkey; and passing beautiful hillsides to Mandara Hut for dinner and overnight.

  • Elevation: 2,700 m (775 ft)
  • Hiking Distance: 7 Km
  • Hiking Time: 3 – 4 Hrs
  • Accommodation: Mandara Huts

DAY 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

The first part of the walk is a steep ascent through forest, but the path soon opens out into grassy moorland and, in clear weather, there are good views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. You will climb steadily through the moorland zone to Horombo Hut (3,720 m.). Sunrises and sunsets here are often very stunning. [5-6hour walk]

DAY 3: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

Climb very gradually towards the lunar desert of the Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. You will reach Kibo Hut (4,700 m.) at the bottom of the crater wall by around midday. The remainder of the day is spent resting and eating in preparation for the final climb at night! [4-5 hour walk]

DAY  4: Summit Day then down to Horombo Hut

Start your ascent by torchlight at about 1 am to get to Gillman’s Point by sunrise. The initial climb is steep over the loose volcanic screen, but there are some well-graded zigzag and a slow but steady pace will have us up to Gillman’s (5,685 m.) in about five or six hours. You will rest there and spend some time enjoying the sunrise. If you are still feeling strong you will do a 3-hour round trip to Uhuru Peak (5,896 m.) passing close to the spectacular glaciers that still occupy most of the summit area. The descent is surprisingly fast and you will return to Horombo Hut for the night. [11-15 hour walk]

DAY 5: Horombo Hut – Marangu Gate

After breakfast, you will start with a pleasant moorland walk to Mandara and then a lovely forest walks back to the park gate due arrival sign out then your Guide will collect your certificates of mérit have lunch prépared by our cook or offered by our firm then have a short tipping ceremony for Thanks giving accompanied by best  Kilimanjaro songs then drive back to the hotel
